Ready for a blast from the past? Thirteen.org has a video up called Will the Gator Glades Survive? It is described as: "A visit to the Florida Everglades reveals how that famed wildlife region is now threatened with destruction because of man’s tampering with the natural water system."

Interesting enough. But if you haven't clicked the link yet, you'll now find out why it's so interesting. It was originally broadcast in 1970 as part of a series Our Vanishing Wilderness thought to be the first televised series on the environment, being shot in 1969 and aired the next year.

The series was co-written by John Hamlet, a well known naturist from Weeki Wachee, who was of course married to a mermaid.

Video: Famous Former Miamian Visits Recycling Center & Landfill

I’ve always wanted to do a drive-along with the local trash collectors. Recently, comedian Annabelle Gurwitch (think TBS’s Dinner and a Movie) did just that near her home in California. She rode with the local recycling truck and also went out to her landfill. It’s a short, entertaining video that has some real insight.

Incidentally, Gurwitch grew up in South Florida and attended Miami Beach High School.

Earthrace Biodiesel Boat Video on Current.TV

Earthrace, the biodiesel boat trying to break the powerboat round-the-world record, was here recently during the Miami Boat show. I teamed up with local video production company Digital Visualistics to sit down and chat with the folks involved with the boat. They’ve now put together the piece, and it is available to view here and on Current.TV. Please give it the green light to get it on the air!

The boat was amazing, the people were even more incredible. I don’t know if I’ve ever been so comfortable with people I’d just met. They have been spreading the good word on biodiesel for a couple of years now, and they have done an incredible job. They take off from Barbados on March 6 to attempt to break the world record. Earthrace exists through the support of the community. In fact, before leaving Miami, (new!) local biodiesel company Sol Atlantic donated 520 gallons of fuel to help get the boat down to Puerto Rico before they head off to Barbados.

Spend some time on the Earthrace site and read some of the blogs – enjoy learning about this wild ride. You may be so inspired to donate some money, time, or resources to the project. They really need the help, especially in these final days before the sixty-something day trip around the earth. And PLEASE…watch the video and let us know what you think, right there on Current!

As some of you may remember, I also co-founded and write on a blog called ecorazzi.com. It is a strange but oddly addicting site that combines green & gossip. Gossip without guilt, if you will. Well, we have produced our first celebrity inspired video to show you how you can save the earth!

Plastic #3 = PVC

We’ve talked about PVC (aka vinyl) here before by recommending the DVD, Blue Vinyl.

Now an organization has created a short video on PVC, it’s cute and fast. Watch Sam Suds and the Case of PVC.

Something I didn’t realize until today, for some reason, is that PVC containers can be recognized by the number 3 in the "recycle triangle" at the bottom of the product.

It is dangerous to make, to use, and to dispose of. Join me in trying to cut out PVC from my life. And tell Target you want them to do the same.
