Sunday. Bike Miami. Be There.

Bikemiami
The Mayor of Miami has got something cool planned for this Sunday, November 9, 2008. Get your bicycle, rollerblades, strollers ready — Bike Miami is going to take over the streets of downtown. From 10 am to 3pm, Flagler (from the Courthouse to Bayfront Park) and S. Miami Ave. (to Mary Brickell Village/10th St) will be open only to bike/pedestrian traffic!

We’re so excited about this event. We love that it is like "open play". You don’t have to start from any specific point. You don’t need to arrive at a specific time. Just get outside and have some fun. This is the kind of event people can participate in as they choose!

Map Of course, if you’d like to participate in something more structured, there are some planned activities. Go to Bayfront Park for PrayerDanse at 9:30 am or Yoga at 1pm. Rally with Mayor Manny Diaz at 11am on the corner of Biscayne & Flagler. After the rally, get a free tour from the Historical Museum, or free passes to Miami Art Museum.

And oh, did we mention the Valet Bike Parking at both Bayfront Park and Mary Brickell Village? Plus, bring your bike on public transit and ride free on Sunday.

After you’ve exhausted yourself by biking, rolling, and walking around downtown, participating in yoga, and shopping at the shops, swing by the Bike Miami After Party at Dolores, But You Can Call Me Lolita in Mary Brickell Village from 2 - 5pm. It’s being organized by our friends from Transit Miami.

Can’t recycle at home in Miami Dade County? Fix it.

Istock_000000629266xsmallOne of the things that we most often get emailed about here at greenerMIAMI is "how in the heck can I recycle?" And the answer isn’t always an easy one. However, through the help of the research done by Luiz Rodrigues and ECOMB, we realized that there is a better answer.

Most of us live in apartments or condominiums in which recycling is not offered. Here’s the interesting part: it’s the law - they have to offer it. It’s been the law in Miami Dade for 15 years, in fact. And so, we’ve put together a page to get you the information you need to know in order to help that law go into effect at your residence.

If you are going to go through the process of trying to get your condo or apartment complex to recycle, please comment on this post and keep us posted throughout the whole process. Hopefully your tips and hard work will make it continually easier for the rest.

To see the details of the recycling ordinance and suggestions on how to make it work for you, please check out:

How to Get Your Condominium or Apartment Complex to Recycle.

Good luck and may the force be with you!

Save the Cypress from Becoming Mulch!

The Gulf Restoration Network is trying to save the coast’s cypress forests from becoming mulch sold at Walmart, Lowe’s, and Home Depot. You can take action on their website and send an email directly to these companies.

Wife Swap Needs An Eco-Family. Got One?

WifeswapA Casting Producer for ABC’s Wife Swap has contacted us, in search of moms to feature on the current season of the show. If you haven’t seen the show, you can imagine: two moms from two very different families get the opportunity to swap lives (but not bedrooms - everyone has their own!) for a week to experience what it’s like to live a different lifestyle - and to see what they can teach each other about their own lifestyle.

So why did they contact us? They want a treehugging family, of course! Here’s how they put it:

We want to feature a family who is involved with the Earthship lifestyle, in hopes of shattering any common misconceptions of what family life for an Earthship dweller might be like! We encourage all families, the bolder and more adventurous the better, with 2 parents at home and school aged children (6-17) to apply immediately. The family can be involved with any aspect of an Earthship way of life (solar living, composting, etc.)

If you’re interested in applying, send an email Abby Koocher. And tell her greenerMIAMI sent you!
