2008 greenerMIAMI Gift Guide

Happy Holidays! If you'll be buying and giving gifts this year, consider going green and supporting local merchants that are providing green products and services. Here are some ideas. Please note that we've not been able to try all of these products or services ourselves.

Gmgiftguide

Go super green and give vintage! Eclectica specializes in finding vintage items and giving them an update or fun twist. We haven't been to this store yet, but just browsing through their website makes us want to take a drive down to Kendall! PS: They offer Home ECOnomics classes themed for the holidays!

Pamper them with a gift certificate to Uhma Spa on South Beach. They state that they use "100% natural, organic and cruelty-free products" in their treatments.

Get their house cleaned from Maid Green. Using only eco-friendly products, Maid Green can clean your home or office. They now offer gift certificates from $50 – $200.

Swing by EcoLav in Brickell, Miami's green dry cleaner to drop off some dry cleaning and pick up some gifts in their shop. They sell personal care products, jewelry, and more. Cool mention: a super nice reusable bamboo hanger is included with each item dry cleaned.

To green their living space, visit White Lotus Home. An online store with a warehouse (and soon to be a brick and mortar location) in South Florida, you can make an appointment to go see everything in person. Call 877.426.3623.

Mamas to Be, Babies, and Kids

Of such few green stores in South Florida, we've found that many are baby and kid related! It deserves its own category.

Pick up a reusable stainless steel or aluminum water bottle at Genius Jones in South Beach or the Design District. A baby/kids store with Design for a New GenerationTM in mind, they offer Sigg bottles (and other brands) for little ones and for their parents!

Liapela,
a fairly new baby store in The Village at Merrick Park in Coral Gables,
also offers a fantastic variety of eco-friendly baby toys and other
products. So many products that I've previously purchased for my son
online, sight unseen, are available here. Yay!

Located in Broward, Green Dwellers is a new, totally eco boutique in Plantation. If you are in the area, check it out! Contact City Living Baby if you would like to give some parents to be a green nursery consultation. They also sell many green baby products online. And don't forget our friends at Baby Posh Garage in Aventura!

Other online only stores that are based locally and carry some green baby/mama products: Best Baby Organics, Baby Eco Trends, Mama Kanga, Booty Boutique, and Nature's Love

Green Online Stores Based in South Florida

Ecoist, best known for their candy wrapper handbags and other eco-friendly yet fashionable accessories.

Green Veranda, pretty cool recycled newspaper products. We've only just discovered this store!

Little Green House sells green home items, including some deliciously soft looking bamboo towels.

Check out Etsy for handmade goods…you can search locally for artists in the area. Staying on the vintage theme, we especially liked Mod Human Vintage!

Alternative Ideas

You don't have to actually buy something material to give a great holiday gift! Get creative – take them kayaking in Oleta River State Park, swing by the Everglades to see the wildlife (it's a great time of year to go), or give a donation in their name to a local green organization such as ECOMB. See "Florida Greenies" in our right sidebar for more ideas. In Broward, consider giving a membership to Trash to Treasure, a non-profit creative re-use center. Love it!

Wrap It Up!

And how will you deliver your gifts this year? Not wrapped in conventional wrapping paper, I hope! Step back in time and use the comics, some scrap fabric, or other items from around the house. Or if you are handy with a sewing machine, consider taking a swing at making some morsbags! More great suggestions can be found at Common Ground.

  1. I’ve just tried ecolav and they are a BIG do NOT recommend. They were rude and the customer service was terrible. They messed up my ticket more than once. I will not use this dry cleaner ever again. OXXO is a better eco alternative IMO.

  2. Thanks so much for including Eclectica in your gift guide! And yes, come on over to Kendall. I promise it’ll be worth the drive :)
