    Hi,
I have been trying to grow plants (herbs + veggies) on my balcony. Is it just too hot in the summer? They have all pretty much burn to a dry crisp. Also I seem to have a big problem with white fly and afids. I tried to place marigols in the mix, but they burned up as well. Should I wait for the cooler months and try again? I live on the beach and get full eastern sun most of the morning.
    Thanks!
    Tina

  2. Tina-
Thank u for that question; I have the same problem! In addition to everything you mentioned above, I have high winds and the majority of my plants get too much sun
and die. I also have a problem with root rot
I would really like to know which plants are hardy enough for balconies.

We have moved from Boulder CO to Coconut Grove and told that there is no home pick up for recycling of paper and plastic products…is this true?
    Thanks…

  5. I live in North Miami and the recycling program only covers Plastics 1, 2, and 3. Do you know of anywhere I can take the other plastics (mainly 5 and 6) or paperboard (cereal boxes) for recycling?

  6. I’m an expectant mother due in December and I am looking into cloth diapering. Do you know of any brick and mortar stores or local online retailers where I might be able to review the different products? It seems that there are so many different options to choose from online and I would like to see with my own eyes the differences between them. It would be even better if I could find a cloth diapering class in the Miami area.

  7. My husband and I have 2 green businesses and find that there just doesn’t seem to be enough people or events about going green as other states Why? We would really love to see more people involved with our plane tand making a difference what can I do?

  8. We have a construction company and like to recycle as much of our waste as we can. We ran into a bit of a problem though. One of our projects required two spiral glass staircases from Italy to be built. Long story short, they sent us the wrong types of steps from Italy and had to resend some 34 extra double pane glass steps. So now we have 34 extra glass steps that we don’t know what to do with. We can just take them to the dump, but I’d like to find a place that can find some use for them. Each one weighs at least 50lbs so we’re talking about a lot of glass here. Any suggestions?

  9. The company I work for in the Gables has always recycled because we take items home. I recently moved from where I could recycle multiple types of paper and light cardboard together to where I cannot. I have searched for recycling companies that pickup materials and have not found very many. Do you know of any?

  13. Hi Rebecca,
I am planning an event on Energy Efficiency for Connect Florida’s Southeast Region, in conjunction with the Green Art Fair Miami on Thursday, December 4th in Midtown Miami. It will be a networking event for Young Professionals (21-35) in South Florida – but it is networking with a purpose. During the month of December, all of the regions represented by Connect Florida (Leadership Florida’s Young Professionals Group) will be tackling the topic of “Going Green” and this is what we have chosen to do in Miami. We are currently looking for a speaker to discuss “Simple Ways We Can All Conserve Energy In Our Day-To-Day Lives” for about 15-20 minutes in the Green Art Fair’s Learning Center. We were wondering if you would be interested in being our speaker, or if you could recommend someone to do it – pro bono. A portion of the proceeds from our event will be donated to an environmental charity. Thanks so much for your help! Warmest regards, Amy

Is there a local company that picks up cardboard for no fee? My company produces about 100 pounds of cardboard a day and we’d like to recycle.

  15. Susan Thomas says:

One of our wonderful parents at Westminster Christian School bought us Recycling Containers, posted signs and volunteered her time in the cafeteria to remind everyone to recycle. She wants to put recycling stickers on the containers but is finding it quite expensive to get them made up. Is there anywhere we can get the recycle symbol for her to put on these containers?

  17. I am in a class that we are learning to write grants at Carlos Albizu University in Doral. Our grant has to improve the school so I am starting a recycling program. For our grant to be approved we need a partnership and I was wonering if GreenerMiami would be interested in being that partner. Please contact for more info on partnership.

  19. Greetings:
I’m trying to find a dealership that sells biodiesel converted vehicles. I know that you can convert a vehicle to run on WVO but I would like to get the vehicle already converted.
Is there a dealership or business that sells or rents WVO vehicles?
    Thanks so much!

  20. Hello, Green Miami! I have a question…I’m planting red kale, and have read to plant in full sun. Does anyone know if I can plant in partial shade? I have a lot of shade in my yard, and I’m trying to plant whatever veggies and herbs as I can in the shade. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Or if someone could recommend a book on S.FL veggie gardening? Thanks!

WHY is there no mandatory recycling in Miami Beach when everyone wants it? It’s a joke! This website is ignoring it, there’s nothing about it posted anywhere! It’s the law and yet everyone just throws away their stuff cause we have not choice. This website is a forum with power and should use it to help do something, speak as a united voice for justice, this is a disgrace and doing nothing is worse because you have the ability to make the change.
