Win It! Book Review: The Green Book

GreenbookThe Green Book has been getting a lot of play in the media since releasing. Filled with tips on how to be good to the environment, celebrity quotes are also scattered throughout the book. (That makes it extra popular in the media, and even on my other website, Ecorazzi.)

The book is actually quite a good resource. You want to know about something specific? It’s probably covered. Some random examples from flipping through the book:

  • Are you a bicyclist? Recycle your tires instead of tossing them. You’ll prevent 2 pounds of rubber from being landfilled and will provide materials for many things, including bike paths.
  • At the hotel, turn the lights off when you’re not in there. 75% of the energy used in hotel rooms is when the bathroom light is left on for more than 2 hours…an it’s usually unoccupied.
  • Avoid using rubber bands. 3/4 of all rubber bands are synthetic, made from crude oil.

And while the tips are helpful, I personally found the book very repetitive. All entries have the same format: What to do, benefits of doing it, and some comparison (ie: if all of the unused X items were lined up it would circle the globe Y times).

The Green Book is a good overall resource for going green to the newbies in the area. It covers topics from home and entertainment to travel and sports. Plus, you can learn how many minutes Jennifer Aniston spends in the shower.

But don’t take my word for it. Read it yourself. Check it out from the Miami Dade Public Library, or enter to win. Just tell us why you want the book in a comment on this post. We’ll select a winner on August 15, 2007. US mailing address required to win.

  4. Myself and a group of equally earth minded people are starting a challenge to help us cut down on waste, be it power, wrapping, resourses. We will discuss our success and downfalls on a monthly bacis so that we have motivation to continue (The “WeightWatchers” of the envior world) It is always easier if you have someone helping to push you.
I have been given the task of organizing it and the green book soound like a great tool to have in helping put to gether the plan.
The group is a part of an existing organization so sorry, unless you are a member of that group you will not be able to join in, but I will keep you posted on how we do and our achievements.

I am a convert! After several years of designing detrimental high rise structures for a living. I quit! I am soon to open my very own environmentally minded used book store (recycle your books!). I have a true (admittedly new) passion to make a difference in this world (if not at least in my own little world). I have a lot to learn, this book would help, and once I read it, I will place it on my shelves…whom ever picks it up…I will gift it to!

I am launching a new TV Show in September called “Green Living In The Florida Keys” and think that this book would be a great resource for me to inform and educate the Keys residents on green living.
I am also the Executive Director of Green Living & Energy Education (GLEE), a 5010 c3 non profit organization based in the Florida Keys. http://www.keysglee.com
    Thank you.
