Eco-friendly Golf

PlantationgolfStuck on the Palmetto recently visited the Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club in Broward County (map). He goes on to describe how the course is environmentally friendly, using special turfgrass that requires less irrigation and fertilization, is Audubon certified, and incorporates a linear park.

I covered this topic almost a year ago over at eco.psfk, however hadn’t heard of any local courses to which this concept applies. Do any readers know of any other local eco-friendly golf courses?

  1. Rebecca: I make it around to many of the courses in Miami-Dade and Broward and I have to sadly report that none of them get even close to Plantation Preserve in their eco-friendliness.
The primary problem is that many of these courses were built at a time when that wasn’t a concern. Making them eco-friendly at this point in time would be a huge expense. One that most course managers could never absorb and remain in business.
Look for more of the concepts used by Plantation Preserve to be integrated into new courses, but I think that most of the old course will remain relatively uneco-friendly.
